January Update

Progress Report | 12/02/2025

Hello, I will use this space to highlight stuff I've worked on - expect an update every month (or every other month). As Miku Hatsune once said: "Pick the pen up and write them down, all the things that make you proud."

Animation

I tried out the Animation workspace in Krita briefly. It is very easy to animate something, not a huge step up from Flipnote (my beloved). The hard and time-consuming part is drawing all the frames. For now I've only done a "simple" pixel art animation making use of many layers.

Godot IK

I've started working on a prototype to test Godots VR functionalities. While testing animations and reading up about the Skeleton3D node I realized there is no Inverse Kinematics (IK) functionality (other than a deprecated node).

However the newly implemented SkeletonModifier3D is supposed to rectify this issue in the future. But why wait? I started coding my own IK node based on the popular (and lightweight) FABRIK method. So far it works decently enough with any bone chain length, but I still need to figure out how to add magnets / pole bones to consider the project finished. Once it's complete I intend to publish it as an addon.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes - Review

The first game I finished this year and one of the best I've played in a long while. If like me you love games like Outer Wilds or Obra Dinn (and maybe Layton), this is a game for you. It starts of explaining literally nothing, just telling you to go investigate the world. Find out who you are and what the truth is.

You explore a mansion with Resident Evil-like fixed camera perspectives that is littered with puzzles. Some of them are immediately solvable, others will take longer to complete. What is holding you back from solving puzzles is usually a lack of information or misinterpreting information. I think that is what makes the puzzles so great. There is nothing artificially holding you back from solving them. Unlike a Zelda game for example where you are limited by having or rather not having certain items. The progression in Lorelei feels more natural.

The general dark, gloomy and slightly otherworldly atmosphere also contributes a lot to the game. The artstyle is super unique and I often felt slightly uneasy while wandering around. That might've also just been due to me playing mostly at night with dim lighting though.

TLDR: The game is incredible and I encourage anyone to go into it as blind as possible.

btw, if you like rhythm games check out their previous game Sayonara Wild Hearts too - it is also very beautiful.
